How should I store my Peak State coffee?
The best place to store your Peak State coffee is in the bag it comes in — our bags are designed to let freshly roasted beans off-gas while keeping air and light out. If you're looking for an upgrade, we recommend the Peak State Airscape Coffee Container, which creates an airtight seal to keep beans fresh longer. Either way, we recommend keeping your coffee in whole bean form until you're ready to brew — grinding only what you need preserves flavor and freshness. For a full walkthrough, check out our How to Store Your Coffee video.
How long does a bag last once opened?
Peak State whole bean coffee stays fresh for up to 12 months after opening, as long as it's properly resealed or stored in an airtight container like an Airscape. If you grind your coffee in advance, expect a shorter window — ground coffee is best used within two to five weeks. This is one of the reasons we keep our coffee in whole bean form.
Can I use Peak State coffee in an espresso machine?
Yes — Peak State whole beans work well for espresso. We recommend a fine grind and suggest starting with our darker roasts, which tend to pull well as espresso and produce a rich, full-bodied shot.
What is the caffeine content of Peak State coffee?
Peak State coffees range from 100–150mg of caffeine per 8oz cup depending on roast level. Lighter roasts retain more caffeine and come in closer to 150mg, while darker roasts are closer to 100mg. Our decaf blend contains just 3–5mg per cup — a good option if you love the ritual but want to skip the caffeine.
What makes Peak State different from other mushroom coffee brands?
Taste, health, and environmental sustainability — and Peak State delivers on all three in ways most mushroom coffee brands don't. On taste: Peak State is the first and only whole bean mushroom coffee, meaning you're drinking real, freshly ground specialty coffee — not a powder or instant blend. We source the highest quality, sustainably grown, single-origin coffee beans and infuse them with botanical extracts of functional mushrooms using our proprietary Peak State Infusion Process™, so the health benefits are seamless and the coffee taste is front and center. On mushroom quality: our mushrooms are sourced from an organic farm in Fort Lupton, Colorado, always fruiting body — never mycelium — and triple-extracted for maximum bioavailability. On sustainability: Peak State is a certified B Corp, certified organic, Regenerative Organic Certified on select blends, Fair Trade certified, and a 1% for the Planet member.
Which is better: whole bean or pre-ground?
Whole bean is always the better choice for flavor and freshness. Coffee begins to lose its aromatic compounds within minutes of grinding, so brewing from whole beans right before you drink means a noticeably better cup. It also gives you control over grind size, which affects extraction and lets you dial in your brew method — whether that's a French press, pour over, drip machine, or espresso. That said, we offer pre-ground for those who prefer the convenience, and it's still high-quality coffee. If you're on the fence, whole bean is worth the investment in a grinder — your morning cup will thank you.
What is a fruiting body extract and why does it matter?
The mushroom can be broken down into two main parts: the fruiting body and the mycelium. The fruiting body is the actual mushroom — the cap and stem — and it contains the highest concentration of beneficial compounds like beta-glucans, which are responsible for most of the health benefits attributed to functional mushrooms. The mycelium is the root structure, and while it's part of the organism, it contains significantly lower levels of active compounds and is often grown on grain substrates, meaning the final product can be mostly filler. Peak State uses only fruiting body extracts, sourced from a Colorado farm, triple-extracted to maximize bioavailability — so each 8oz cup delivers 500mg of actual mushroom extract, not diluted powder.
How much mushroom extract is in each cup?
Each 12oz bag of Peak State contains 22 servings. Every 8oz brewed cup delivers 500mg of certified organic mushroom fruiting body extract, triple-extracted for maximum bioavailability.
Does Peak State Coffee taste like mushrooms?
No — Peak State tastes like high-quality specialty coffee. The mushroom extracts are infused directly into the beans during roasting using our proprietary Peak State Infusion Process™, which means you get the health benefits without any earthy or mushroom aftertaste. If you're skeptical, we offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee for first-time customers.
What is the Peak State Infusion Process?
We built Peak State because we were tired of mushroom coffees that didn't actually taste like good coffee. The Peak State Infusion Process™ was our solution. While the exact process is proprietary, here's how it works at a high level: we first extract our mushrooms into a botanical liquid — a triple extraction of fruiting body — and then infuse that directly into our coffee beans during the roast, using equipment and a process we developed ourselves. The result is whole bean coffee that tastes like premium specialty coffee, with 500mg of mushroom extract per cup. You shouldn't have to choose between a healthy coffee and one you actually enjoy. Is mushroom coffee safe to drink every day?
Yes — Peak State coffee is designed to be part of your daily routine. The functional mushrooms in our blends, including lion's mane, chaga, cordyceps, reishi, and turkey tail, have long histories of daily use in traditional medicine and are generally well-tolerated by healthy adults. As with any functional food, we recommend consulting your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or have known mushroom allergies.
Why does Peak State use lion's mane, chaga, cordyceps, reishi, and turkey tail mushrooms together?
Each of these five mushrooms targets a different aspect of daily wellness. Lion's mane supports cognitive function and focus. Cordyceps supports energy and endurance at the cellular level by enhancing ATP production. Reishi is an adaptogen that helps the body manage stress and supports immune balance. Chaga is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods on earth and supports systemic immune health. Turkey tail is rich in beta-glucans and polysaccharides that support gut health and immune function. Together they cover brain, body, immunity, and stress — which is why rather than taking five separate supplements and separately drinking coffee, Peak State brings all five into one daily cup.
Is Peak State coffee low acid?
Yes. Peak State sources sustainably shade-grown, certified organic coffee that is naturally lower in acidity than conventional sun-grown coffee. Coffee evolved to grow under the rainforest canopy, and shade-grown beans develop more slowly, producing a smoother, less acidic cup. We've verified this with pH testing — Peak State coffee is measurably less acidic than conventional coffee, making it a great option for anyone with a sensitive stomach or acid reflux.
Is mushroom coffee actually good for you?
Yes, with some honest nuance. Coffee itself is one of the most well-studied beverages in the world — it's high in antioxidants and linked in large-scale studies to reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and neurodegenerative conditions. Functional mushrooms add another layer: they're rich in beta-glucans, antioxidants, and adaptogenic compounds that support immunity, stress response, and cognitive function. Lion's mane in particular has shown promising results in clinical studies for memory and brain health. The honest caveat is that most clinical research focuses on mushroom extracts as standalone supplements rather than in coffee specifically, and more studies are needed to draw firm conclusions about long-term outcomes. What we can say with confidence is that Peak State delivers real, third-party tested fruiting body extracts at 500mg per cup — the form and dose the research actually supports. Is mushroom coffee safe for everyone?
Peak State coffee is safe for most healthy adults. As with any functional food, people who are pregnant, nursing, taking blood thinners, or have known mushroom allergies should consult their doctor before adding it to their routine.
Is mushroom coffee safe for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals?
Peak State coffee contains caffeine, which most health guidelines recommend limiting to 200mg or less per day during pregnancy. Our blends range from 100–150mg per cup, so moderate consumption may fit within those guidelines — but every pregnancy is different. The functional mushrooms in our coffee, while generally well-tolerated, have limited research specifically on pregnant or breastfeeding populations. We recommend consulting your physician before adding Peak State to your routine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Can mushroom coffee cause any side effects?
Most people tolerate mushroom coffee well, especially when consumed as part of a regular routine. Some people notice mild effects when starting out, most commonly related to caffeine sensitivity, taking it on an empty stomach, or their body adjusting to the functional mushrooms. These typically resolve within a few days. If you experience persistent discomfort, we recommend reducing your serving size or consulting your doctor.
How long does it take to feel the benefits of mushroom coffee?
Some effects are immediate — Peak State's low-acid profile means a smoother experience from the first sip, and the caffeine kicks in within minutes. If you're drinking a blend with lion's mane, many people notice improved focus relatively quickly. The deeper benefits of functional mushrooms — immune support, stress resilience, sustained cognitive function — build over time with daily use. Most studies on functional mushrooms involve chronic supplementation, so we recommend giving it 30 days to assess how you feel. Mushroom coffee is also partly about what you don't experience: many people notice fewer jitters, less afternoon crash, and less stomach irritation compared to regular coffee.
What's the best time to drink mushroom coffee?
Enjoy Peak State any time you'd normally reach for coffee. If you're drinking a caffeinated blend, we recommend finishing your last cup at least 8 hours before bed to allow the caffeine to clear your system and avoid disrupting sleep. Our decaf blend is a great option for an afternoon cup without the sleep trade-off. If you've ever had coffee too close to bedtime, we've got you covered — check out our guide on how to fall asleep after drinking coffee.
Is mushroom coffee psychedelic?
No. Peak State uses functional mushrooms — lion's mane, cordyceps, chaga, reishi, and turkey tail — none of which contain psilocybin or any psychoactive compounds. These are the same mushrooms used in traditional medicine for centuries and are widely available as everyday health supplements. Peak State will not alter your perception or produce any psychedelic effects.
What are the disadvantages of mushroom coffee?
The main considerations are cost and timeline. Quality mushroom coffee uses premium ingredients — organic, single-origin beans, fruiting body extracts, third-party tested — and that comes at a price compared to conventional coffee. On timeline, functional mushrooms work best as a daily habit rather than a one-time fix. If you're expecting instant dramatic results, you may be disappointed in the short term. Give it 30 days and pay attention to the subtle shifts — less brain fog, fewer jitters, better immunity through the season.
What are the benefits of mushroom coffee?
Mushroom coffee combines the well-documented benefits of coffee — antioxidants, focus, metabolism support — with the adaptogenic and immune-supporting properties of functional mushrooms. The result is a daily cup that works harder for your health without asking you to change your routine. [Read our full guide to the health benefits of mushroom coffee →]

What is B Corp certification and does Peak State have it?
B Corp Certification is an integrated business certification that assesses and verifies a company's social, environmental, and governance impact against the B Lab Standards. When you certify as a B Corp, it signals to stakeholders — customers, employees, and investors — that your company is committed to responsible business practices that benefit people and the planet, not just shareholders. Peak State is a certified B Corp with a score of 121.2, placing us among the highest-scoring companies in the coffee category.
What is Regenerative Organic Certification and which products carry it?
Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC) is widely considered the highest standard for organic agriculture in the world, with requirements that go significantly beyond USDA Organic. It incorporates three pillars: soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness. Peak State offers ROC-certified coffees including our Brain Sustain and Stress Less Colombia Dark Roasts, and our Immunity Boost Peru, Nicaragua, and Guatemala Medium Roasts.
Is Peak State third-party tested for molds and heavy metals?
Yes. Peak State is third-party tested by Eurofins, one of the world's leading food safety laboratories, for over 18 different molds, mycotoxins, and heavy metals. Our coffee is both mold-free and pesticide-free. View our full Certificate of Analysis and testing results at peakstatecoffee.com/pages/testing-transparency.
How does Peak State measure their mushroom potency?
We perform beta-glucan and alpha-glucan testing on the fruiting body extracts used in our coffee. Beta-glucans are the primary active compounds responsible for the immune and adaptogenic benefits of functional mushrooms, so testing for them directly verifies that our extracts are actually potent — not just labeled as such. Results are available at peakstatecoffee.com/pages/testing-transparency.
Where can I view Peak State's lab results?
Peak State's full third-party lab results, including Eurofins certificates of analysis for mold, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and mushroom beta-glucan potency testing, are available at peakstatecoffee.com/pages/testing-transparency.
What is 1% for the Planet and how does Peak State participate?
1% for the Planet is a global certification that verifies a company donates at least 1% of total revenue — not profits, but gross sales — to approved environmental nonprofits. It's a meaningful distinction because donating from revenue is a significantly higher bar than donating from profits. Peak State is a certified 1% for the Planet member, meaning every purchase you make contributes directly to environmental causes.
What is Peak State doing for the environment?
Peak State approaches environmental sustainability across every part of the business — sourcing, supply chain, packaging, and profit. Our coffee is sourced from certified organic and Regenerative Organic Certified farms, always sustainably shade-grown to preserve rainforest ecosystems. Our mushrooms come from MycoLove Farms, a local organic farm in Fort Lupton, Colorado. On packaging, we offer compostable options through our Coffee in a Tea Bag, recyclable options through our EcoCan and cold brew, and a 5lb bag for customers who want to reduce packaging waste per ounce of coffee. As a certified B Corp and 1% for the Planet member, we're independently verified as a better-for-the-planet business — and 1% of every sale goes directly to environmental nonprofits.
Where is Peak State coffee roasted?
Peak State coffee is roasted by Ampersand Coffee Roasters in Boulder, Colorado. Roasting locally keeps our supply chain tight, supports a fellow Colorado small business, and ensures every bag is fresh.
Where are Peak State's mushrooms sourced from?
Peak State sources mushrooms from MycoLove Farms, an organic mushroom farm in Fort Lupton, Colorado. Growing locally means we can verify the quality of the substrate used, ensure fruiting body harvesting rather than mycelium, and maintain a short supply chain from farm to roaster. MycoLove uses nutrient-rich growing substrates and a triple extraction process that preserves the full spectrum of beneficial compounds. US-grown, locally verified, and never from overseas commodity suppliers.
Is mushroom coffee FDA approved?
Despite the name, no food product is FDA approved — the FDA approves drugs, not foods. Peak State coffee is fully compliant with FDA food safety regulations. Our functional mushrooms are used in accordance with established safety guidelines, and all of our coffee products are third-party tested for toxins.
What do doctors say about mushroom coffee?
Medical institutions like UCLA Health and NewYork-Presbyterian recognize functional mushrooms as a promising area of wellness research, while noting that studies specifically on mushroom coffee are still emerging. The individual mushrooms in Peak State's blend, however, have meaningful research behind them. A 2023 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Nutrients found that lion's mane supplementation improved cognitive function, stress, and mood in healthy young adults. A 2024 analysis similarly found lion's mane helped boost cognition and energy in older adults. Cordyceps has been studied for its ability to increase cellular energy production and improve exercise performance, with two well-controlled clinical trials showing benefits in healthy older individuals. A 2023 review found chaga supports immune function with potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The key distinction is quality — research consistently points to fruiting body extracts as the most bioactive form, which is why Peak State uses only fruiting body mushrooms, third-party tested at 500mg per cup. As with any functional food, consult your doctor if you have pre-existing conditions or take medications.
What makes the healthiest mushroom coffee?
The healthiest mushroom coffee starts with the coffee itself — it should be certified organic, single-origin, and free of mold and pesticides, verified by third-party testing. On the mushroom side, sourcing matters enormously: look for US-grown mushrooms on nutrient-rich substrates, always fruiting body rather than mycelium, and organic certification. Extraction method is equally important — raw mushroom powder is poorly absorbed by the body, so a proper extract, ideally triple-extracted, is what actually delivers bioavailable compounds. Finally, look for beta-glucan testing, which verifies that the extract is actually potent rather than just labeled as such. Peak State meets every one of these criteria, verified through third-party lab results available at peakstatecoffee.com/pages/testing-transparency.
